High on the Highline

Street view of the New York City HighlineWalking along the Highline. This 9-block raised urban park in New York City has got to be one of the great public places built in the last decade. Constructed on the abandoned elevated rail platform on New York’s lower West Side, this is a linear landscaped park rich with plantings, art work and, best of all, endless and varied views of the city and Hudson River.

It is an absolute pleasure to stroll 40 feet above the hustle and bustle of the city and peer down the numbered streets on one side and at the river on the other. Elegant design details, creative ample seating and surprising art humanize the scale and enliven the experience.  The meandering park passes under several buildings as it twists and turns northward from the Meatpacking District to Chelsea. The second of three planned phases opens soon.
